Let’s be honest, there are multiple reactions when therapy is brought up, and quite frankly, those reactions can be a lot! For many, therapy is perceived as this place of fear and vulnerability which has caused many to be scared or reluctant to try it because we have no idea what to expect.
Therapy is intended to be a place of reflection and growth. When I introduce the work we do in therapy, I describe it as “weird.” Sometimes we laugh and other times we cry. Sometimes you feel like you are exposed, and that feels uncomfortable. Other times you feel known and understood in ways you have been searching for your entire life.
Through the work in therapy, you can find new ways to experience yourself and the world around you. Most people do this by connecting with a deeper sense of self and learning how to honor their uniqueness and authenticity. “The work” of therapy is the commitment to show up for yourself and use tools and strategies commonly known as coping skills. Some examples of coping skills are thought challenging, observing your thoughts/emotions, building awareness, and trying things differently.
Let’s talk about what you should know and expect:
You will experience different levels of both discomfort and relief.
You will discover and learn new things about yourself.
You will gain new actions steps to create transformative change in your life.
You will build a relationship with your therapist that feels safe and judgment free.
The therapeutic process can be transformative and empowering. If you are ready to create healthy and long-lasting changes in your life, it sounds like therapy is the next step!
