When Growth Hurts

During the process of change (aka Growth) a multitude of internal experiences are occurring at the same time. Being in the process of growth, especially during good therapy work, can cause some ripple affects we were not expecting.  This is where the concept of Hurt comes in. Growth may bring about discomfort, disruption, and at times, downright ugliness. The Hurt may manifest as distressing memories, confronting past versions of ourselves, intense emotions, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of loneliness. While our instinct may be to avoid these sources of pain, consider what it would mean for you to confront them directly.

Can we stretch our ability to hold and recognize our Hurt?

Can we believe in our ability to care for ourselves even when it Hurts?

Can we look at ourselves and our relationships differently?

Putting ourselves in a position of reflection and self discovery can be an arduous journey. But what’s that saying - with every storm comes the rainbow. I encourage you to allow the Hurt to exist. It is within our pain that we find our strength to bounce back, to persevere, and to fully embrace the complexity of being human in this beautiful world.
